About Buddy Battles
Buddy Battles gives your studying a creature to fight for. You start by hatching a buddy from an egg, then take it down a path of five gyms, each one guarded by two trainers and a gym leader. Every battle move comes from a question pulled from your own material. Get it right and your buddy attacks. Get it wrong and the other side gets a free hit. There is no separate quiz screen to sit through first. The quiz is the fight.
Every buddy and every trainer has a type, and each type beats one other type in a simple circle: Fire beats Grass, Grass beats Rock, Rock beats Electric, Electric beats Water, and Water beats Fire. Before a battle you pick a team of three buddies, and you can see whether your types are strong or weak against the trainer you are about to face. Answer three questions correctly in a row and your buddy's Special move charges up, so a good streak pays off with a bigger hit on your next correct answer.
Hatching is its own small loop. Winning battles fills an egg meter, and a full meter turns into a brand-new egg to crack open. Hatch a buddy you already own and it turns into Treats instead, which level up the buddies already on your team. So every battle, win or lose, is feeding either a new buddy or a stronger one, and the Buddy Dex keeps a running count of how many species you have found.
The five gyms cover five different types, and clearing all five unlocks the Final Exam: three battles back to back with no healing in between, capped off by a trainer called the Examiner. Beat that run and you're named Champion, though rival trainers keep coming back with stronger teams for a rematch, so there is always another battle waiting once you reach the top.
